Treatment of Canker Sores

30 Jan 2013

If you’ve had a canker sore, you know the pain and discomfort that often comes with everyday activities like eating and talking. But what are they, and what solutions are out there?

Canker sores are small shallow ulcers that appear in the mouth and often make eating or talking uncomfortable. There are two types of canker sores: simple canker sores, which appear three or four times a year and last up to a week, and complex canker sores, which are less common and occur more often in people who previously had them. Physicians have yet to determine the exact causes of canker sores, but risk factors include stress and certain foods.

Canker sores can be prevented by avoiding foods that irritate your mouth, like citrus fruits, acidic vegetables and spicy foods. They can also be prevented by flossing daily and brushing your teeth with a soft-bristled brush after meals.

If you have a canker sore, there are various treatment options available. You can start by rinsing with a saltwater solution or sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) solution, which can help the mouth heal quickly by gently reducing the alkalinity and bacteria in the mouth. You can also use a hydrogen peroxide solution (do not swallow it!) that will have the same effect as a saltwater solution.

If the sore is more complex, it may require treatment from your dentist. Oral medication such as Tetracycline, which is not for use by children, is an antibiotic that may be prescribed for cases where there are multiple, very powerful canker sores.
