How to Reduce Tooth Sensitivity

30 Oct 2013

Sensitive teeth, discomfort in mouthIf you’ve ever experienced tooth sensitivity then you know how painful it can be. Triggered by a glass of cold water or a piece of candy, tooth sensitivity can suddenly occur for a number of reasons. Tooth sensitivity usually happens to those with exposed dentin, which is where the nerves of your teeth are. This can be caused if the enamel is worn away or the root of the tooth is exposed due to a receding gum line. There are things you can do to reduce the sensitivity in your teeth and help you feel lot a better.

  • Sensitive Toothpaste – Get a toothpaste that is formalized to help people dealing with tooth sensitivity. These toothpastes usually have potassium nitrate or calming agents to reduce the sensitive feeling that occurs when your teeth are exposed to certain things.
  • Brush Properly – Observe your brushing technique. Are you brushing too hard? If so, try getting a softer toothbrush. Brushing too hard can wear away enamel or push on your gums.
  • Avoid Certain Foods – If you know that sour candy and pickles cause you sensitivity, try to avoid those items. The best thing you can do is to eliminate the foods that cause you sensitivity from your diet.
  • Dental Visit – If you have severe tooth sensitivity the best thing you can do is to go to your dentist and get their help. They can figure out if you need a filling, plastic resin, or a fluoride rinse to best solve your problem.
